Longwall shearers remove rectangular blocks of coal or panels from underground. They are often used alongside other equipment such as the machine that prevents rocks from falling off the ceiling. They can reach as high as three-story building to get to large amounts of coal in one sweep. Their rotating drums are big circles covered in "teeth" that chew through underground coal to help remove it from the earth and bring it to the surface.
